If you slew about one degree to the southeast from NGC 6544, NGC 6553 will pop into view. This 8.3 magnitude globular star cluster covers a 3' diameter area in the sketch at left, which presents a 190X view in my 10-inch, f/4.5 reflector. The western portion of the cluster looks brighter to my eye. A 13th magnitude star stands sentry along the northwest edge. NGC 6553's brightest members glow faintly at 15.3 magnitude, suggesting large aperture is required before any can be resolved. Of the 27 field stars, the brightest is 9.7 magnitude HD 165973, about 4' east-southeast of NGC 6553.
