Astrophotography

line

A good astrophoto captures the imagination like little else. The Orion nebula's crimson wings spread across the sky like flames. A comet poses gracefully above the tree line at dusk. Jupiter's colorful atmosphere seems a churning river of pastels. These are the images that inspire us to gaze upon the sky with a telescope. This section is designed to help you get started in astrophotography.

Tripod-mounted Astrophotography

Tripod-Mounted
Tripod-mounted, unguided astrophotography is the least expensive and easiest to learn form of astroimaging. Absolute beginners should start here.

Piggyback

Piggyback
Piggyback astrophotography is more complicated and expensive than tripod-mounted work. However, you can get good results with minimal investment in time and money. Come in for a look at the basics of piggyback imaging.

Prime Focus

Prime Focus
One of the most challenging ways to capture the night sky on film is to take a guided exposure at the prime focus of your telescope. If you've ever dreamed of capturing the Orion nebula in all its glory, visit that section.

The Astrophoto Gallery

The Astrophoto Gallery
My best efforts at capturing the night sky on film are exhibited in this Gallery. I make no pretenses about the quality of my work. It's average at best. However, by displaying these images in all their, uh...glory, I hope to illustrate the problems you will encounter doing astrophotography as well as the successes.
