This is one of many bright globular star clusters to be found in Ophiuchus. You'll find NGC 6316 in the southeast corner, 1.5 degrees due west of 5.3 magnitude 43 Ophiuchi. The 8.1 magnitude globular is shown in the sketch at left. Observed at 82X with the 10-inch Newtonian, NGC 6316 covers a 3' diameter area and features a significantly brighter core region. The brightest members of the cluster are quite faint at 16.0 magnitude. None are resolved, although a 10th magnitude GSC star is visible at the southeast edge of the globular. The 8.5 magnitude star, HD 155867, shines 19' northwest of NGC 6316. About 10' beyond, a faint trio of GSC stars mark the northwest field boundary.
