Herschel 400 Objects

NGC 5746: Edge-on Spiral Galaxy (Virgo) RA: 14h 44.9m / DEC: +01° 57'.3
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

NGC 5746 is a miniature version of the remarkable edge-on galaxy NGC 4565. The view in the 10-inch at 129X shows a 5'x1' elongation oriented northwest-to-southeast. This 12.8 magnitude Sb-type galaxy shows a dark lane dividing the core along its disk. 8.5 magnitude HD 129827 stands sentry at the galaxy's northern tip. You'll find NGC 5746 about 20' due west of 3.7 magnitude 109 Virginis.
