NGC 5054 is a 10.8 magnitude galaxy in southern Virgo. The bright star Spica is about 6 degrees to the north-northeast. 5.0 magnitude 53 Virginis stands 1.3 degrees northwest of the galaxy. NGC 5054 appears as a 4'x2' nebulous patch at 129X in the 10-inch Starfinder. This spiral galaxy features a stellar nucleus surrounded by an inner 2'x1' core region. The spiral arms quickly fade into the background sky. Two 14th magnitude GSC stars are visible against the galactic disk and another 32 field stars are included in my sketch. NGC 5054 shares this slice of sky with a nice four-galaxy grouping. Look for NGCs 5035, 5037, 5044 and 5049 24' to the northwest.
