NGC 4958: Lenticular Galaxy (Virgo) RA: 13h 05.8m / DEC: -08° 01'.2 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
Tucked away in southern Virgo, NGC 4958 resides 5.7 degrees northwest of that constellation's brightest star, 1.0 magnitude Spica. In fact, you may run into nearby NGC 4995 while tracking down this lenticular galaxy. My sketch portrays the view at 190X in the 10-inch Starfinder. NGC 4958 covers a 3'x1' area extending along a northeast-to-southwest axis. The galaxy features a stellar core region. It appears broadest at the core and tapers toward each end. A 14th magnitude star dimly glows just 1'.5 to the west. 8.8 magnitude HD 113651 is just outside the field of view, 9' to the southwest. |
