NGC 4699 is a 9.5 magnitude galaxy in southern Virgo. Although the immediate vicinity is rather devoid of bright stars, 4.7 magnitude Chi (26) Virginis is located just 2.5 degrees to the west-northwest. 4.8 magnitude Psi (40) Virginis stands 1.6 degrees to the southeast. The view in the 10-inch Newtonian shows NGC 4699 oriented northeast-to-southwest over a 2'x1' area. This is shown in the sketch at left, as are twelve field stars. Among the field stars are two 11th magnitude GSC stars, one 5' east of the galaxy and the other 11'.4 to the northwest. NGC 4699 has a measured radial velocity of 1478 km/sec, which suggests a distance similar to that of NGC 4697.
