NGC 4698: Spiral Galaxy (Virgo) RA: 12h 48.4m / DEC: +08° 29'.2
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

The sketch at left captures an 82X view in my 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian. Centered in the drawing, is 8.1 magnitude HD 111257. This solar-type star resides in northwest Virgo and marks the location of NGC 4698. The galaxy is guarded by 10th and 11th magnitude stars separated by just short of 5 arc minutes in declination. 10.6 magnitude NGC 4698 bridges the gap between these stars. The SA-type spiral covers a 4'x1'.5 area and is aligned roughly north-south. A stellar core region is discernable under moderate magnification. HD 111257 shines just 6'.5 to the west. Another 15 stars dot the field as framework for this stellar metropolis. You'll find NGC 4698 about 4 degrees southwest of 2.8 magnitude Vindemiatrix.
