NGC 4442: Galaxy Group (Virgo) RA: 12h 28.1m / DEC: +09° 48'.3 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
NGC 4442 is one of five galaxies featured in the sketch at left, which captures an 82X view in my 10-inch Starfinder. In addition to NGC 4442, the group includes NGCs 4417, 4424, 4445 and 4451. This gathering is located 1.3 degrees south of NGC 4429. At 10.5 magnitude, NGC 4442 is easily the brightest of the five. This bared spiral is the east-to-west aligned nebula in the northern portion of the drawing. The faintest member is NGC 4445 at 12.9 magnitude. This spiral galaxy is seen 22' due south of NGC 4442. NGC 4417, 11.1 magnitude, is positioned 22' southwest of NGC 4442. This SO-type galaxy is elongated roughly northeast-to-southwest. NGC 4424, an ll.6 magnitude spiral on an east-west axis, is seen between NGC 4417 and NGC 4445. NGC 4445 is the only member of the quintet not showing elongation in the 10-inch. |
