This delicate spiral wonder stands sentry in northern Coma Berenices at the border with Canes Venatici. My sketch records the view at the eyepiece of the 10-inch equatorial Newtonian. NGC 4414's 10.2 magnitude glow is spread across a 4'x2' area. It is elongated northwest-to-southeast and features and slender 2' central core region. 7.6 magnitude HD 108078 is visible 24' to the southwest near the edge of the field. Twenty additional field stars complete the scene. While in the area, look for NGC 4395 2.3 degrees to the north.
