This galaxy pair is located in north-central Ursa Major, just a few degrees west of the area featured in the first Hubble Deep Field image. Of course, an amateur telescope won't reveal as many galaxies as the Space Telescope. But the fact that a small optical telescope can reveal distant galaxies at all is sort of mind boggling. The sketch at left renders an 82X view in my 10-inch Newtonian. NGC 4036 appears elongated, 120"x15", along an east-west axis. It is listed in the RC3 at 10.7 magnitude. NGC 4041, about 15' to the north, spreads its 11.3 magnitude glow over a 3' diameter area. A pair of faint GSC stars are seen immediately to the south. Another 13 field stars frame the view.
