NGC 4030 resides in central Virgo, about 5 degrees west of 3.9 magnitude Eta (15) Virginis. The sketch at left, based on a 129X view in my 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian, shows NGC 4030 sandwiched between a pair of bright stars. The 1'.3x1'.2 spiral features a stellar core region surrounded by an even intensity disk. No hint of spiral structure is revealed to the eye. 11.0 magnitude PPM 178653 shines 2' to the south. A 12th magnitude ember is seen 1'.5 to the north. Another nine stars complete the drawing.
