NGC 3556=M108: Spiral Galaxy (Ursa Major) RA: 11h 11.5m / DEC: +55° 40'.3 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
M108 is spiral galaxy located near Merak, in Ursa Major. A 1.5-degree slew southeast from the bottom front star in the bowl of the Big Dipper will land you squarely on M108. My sketch is based on the view in my 10-inch Starfinder at 82X. M108 appears nearly edge-on covering a 6'x2' area. This Sc-type spiral has an integrated visual magnitude of 10.0 and a surface brightness of 21.6 magnitudes per square arc second, which is fairly bright. The galaxy displays a stellar core and a 13th magnitude star is visible in the foreground at the galaxy's western tip. The Owl Nebula, M97, is just 47' to the southeast. |
