This fine little galaxy lives just down the street from M81 and M82, about 4.5 degrees north-northeast of them in fact. The sketch at left renders a 129X view in my 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian. NGC 3147 features a stellar core embedded within a roughly 4' diameter oval disk. The galactic disk appears slightly elongated along a west-northwest to east-southeast axis. This 10.6 magnitude Sb/Sc-type spiral stands just 4' west of an 11th magnitude GSC star. Closer still are two 14th magnitude stars, one each along the east and west flanks of the galaxy. Another ten stars are shown scattered across the field. 6.5 magnitude HD 88815 is positioned outside the field of view, about 20' to the south.
