Star trails around Polaris: Two-hour unguided exposure on Kodak PJM 640 color print film

Star Trails

Recording star trails on film is easy and fun. I took this photo on the night of August 11, 1999. The photo was taken with a Nikon F3 camera and a 35-mm to 70-mm zoom lens set to 35-mm. I used Kodak PJM (ASA 640) color print film and exposed for two hours at f/4. The photo records evidence of the axial rotation of the Earth in the form of star trails circling about Polaris. Such photos are enhanced by framing the shot to include an interesting foreground object. I selected a tall Ponderosa pine which points at Polaris.
