NGC 7814: Spiral Galaxy (Pegasus) RA: 00h 03.3m / DEC: +16° 08'.8 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
The sketch at left captures a 190X view in my 10-inch Newtonian. 10.6 magnitude NGC 7814 is centered, a 3'x1'.5 lenticular form aligned west-northest to east-southeast. Although no dark lane is visible in my scope, there are subtle hints that such a features exists. The two major components of the galaxy, divided along the axis of alignment, both appear brighter toward their outer edges. And there's just the hint of darkening between the two hemispheres. This is a galaxy that just teases an observer with moderate aperture. Seventeen stars dot the field. A trio of 11th through 13th magnitude embers are arranged 6' to the north near the field boundary. 7.2 magnitude HD 225001, 12' to the northwest, lies beyond the field of view. NGC 7814 resides in eastern Pegasus about 2.5 degrees northwest of 2.8 magnitude Algenib, Gamma (88) Pegasi. |
