It's easy to see how NGC 7009 earned its nickname. This interesting planetary nebula has a photographic magnitude of 8.3 and resides in Aquarius, 1.3 degrees west of 4.5 magnitude Nu (13) Aquarii. This planetary, like many, shows best at high magnification. My sketch is based on a 258X view in the 10-inch Starfinder. NGC 7009 looks like Saturn in profile. Its 25" center features short ansae at the northeast and southwest sides. But it's a dead star, a preview of the Sun's destiny. A 12th magnitude GSC stands 6' to the southeast near the field boundary. The star 1'.5 northwest of NGC 7009 shines at 14th magnitude.
