NGC 6940 is a rich open star cluster in northcentral Vulpecula. It is presented in the sketch at left, which records the view in my 10-inch, f/4.5 Meade Newtonian at 36X. Normally, I don't observe deep-sky objects at such low magnification (7.0-mm exit pupil). But this cluster is expansive, covering a 31' diameter area according to Lynga. Framing the cluster with as much sky as possible helps it stand out against the rich star fields of the summer Milky Way. About 80 stars in all are recorded in the drawing. The cluster is centered and occupies most of the field rendered. The brightest member, and 8th magnitude GSC star, is shown 9' northeast of center. 10.0 magnitude HD 334753 is visible 1'.3 to the west-northwest. The five brighter stars arranged rectangularly toward the northern field boundary range from 8th to 10th magnitude. The misty glow from hundreds of unresolved stars is spread across the field in a haphazard form. Observers with substantially more aperture would undoubtedly be treated to a truly stunning display. NGC 6940 is stationed 2.3 degrees southeast of 4.0 magnitude 41 Cygni.
