This little galaxy keeps vigil along the border with Ophiuchus in the southeast corner of Serpens Caput. The nearest bright star is Yed Priori, Delta (1) Serpentis Caput, 2.3 degrees to the southwest. The sketch at left presents the view in my 10-inch Newtonian at 129X. NGC 6118 is positioned just north of center in the drawing. The Sc-type galaxy is oriented northeast-to-southwest. Its 11.6 magnitude glow is spread across an oval, 4'.5x2' area. A 12th magnitude GSC star hangs 3'.5 southeast of the galaxy's core region. Another 14 stars dot the field. 6.3 magnitude HD 147550 lies 16' to the northeast, just beyond the eyepiece boundary.
