NGC 5322: Elliptical Galaxy (Ursa Major) RA: 13h 49.3m / DEC: +60° 11'.5 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
NGC 5322 resides in northeastern Ursa Major, nestled between the Big Dipper and Draco. 5.5 magnitude HD 117376 is nearby, just 2.6 degrees to the west. 7.2 magnitude HD 119842 is closer still, 41' due west and just beyond the western field boundary in the sketch at left. Based on the view in my 10-inch Newtonian at 129X, the drawing shows NGC 5322 neatly centered. The elliptical galaxy is elongated east-west across a 4'x3' area. Its 10.2 magnitude glow gradually brightens around the stellar core. An 11th magnitude GSC star shines 6' to the northeast of NGC 5322 and a 13th magnitude ember is parked inbetween. Another 6 stars provide context. |
