NGC 4689: Spiral Galaxy (Coma Berenices) RA: 12h 47.8m / DEC: +13° 45'.9 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
NGC 4689 waits in southern Coma Berenices just across the border from Virgo. The drawing at left captures the scene in my 10-inch Newtonian. I used a 13.8-mm Meade SWA eyepiece (82X) to produce the view. NGC 4689 is about centered with a pair of stars, 11th and 12th magnitude in the GSC catalog, positioned 3'.4 to the north. The galaxy covers a 2' diameter area. Classified as an Sa-type spiral, NGC 4689 has a visual magnitude of 10.9 and a surface brightness of 22.4 magnitude per square arc second. 6.5 magnitude 28 Comae Berenices is visible 14' south of the galaxy. 8.0 magnitude HD 111256 stands just inside the southern field boundary. |
