NGC 4570: Edge-on Spiral Galaxy (Virgo) RA: 12h 36.9m / DEC: +07° 14'.9 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
There are hundreds of galaxies to be observed in Virgo with a moderate aperture telescope. See if you can find this one. NGC 4570 is located about 1.3 degrees west-northwest of 5.6 magnitude 31 Virginis. The sketch at left is based on the view in my 10-inch Newtonian at 82X. NGC 4570 appears as a pencil-thin nebulosity, 4'x0'.5 in size, with a discernible stellar core. This 10.9 magnitude edge-on spiral is oriented nearly north-south with a 12th magnitude GSC star about 3' to the north. NGC 4526 is in the vicinity, about 50' to the northwest. |
