NGC 4494: Elliptical Galaxy (Coma Berenices) RA: 12h 31.4m / DEC: +25° 46'.4
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

This 9.8 magnitude elliptical galaxy shares the same address as 17 Comae Berenices. The 5.3 magnitude star is about 35' to the west-northwest. NGC 4494 covers a 2' diameter area in the sketch at left, which presents the view at 82X in my 10-inch Starfinder. The drawing presents a galaxy displaying even brightness across its face and a pinpoint stellaring at the core. A host of 11th through 14th magnitude GSC stars clutter the area immediately north of the spiral. These are bounded by four brighter stars. While in the area, don't miss the great edge-on spiral, NGC 4565, which lies just 1.1 degree to the east.
