NGC 4293: Barred Spiral Galaxy (Coma Berenices) RA: 12h 21.2m / DEC: +18° 23'.0 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
You'll find NGC 4293 lost amidst the tangle of stars called Berenice's hair, Coma Berenices. The sketch at left presents a 129X view in the 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian. NGC 4293 is just south of center. Its 10.4 magnitude glow is spread across a 5'x2' area, widest near the core, and aligned east-northeast to west-southwest. A brighter inner region runs the length of the galaxy. A 13th magnitude GSC star marks the northeast tip of the barred spiral with a trio of 11th through 13th magnitude GSC stars arranged 2' to the north. A 14th magnitude GSC star rides against NGC 4293's southern edge. Thirteen additional field stars round out the display. Beyond the edge of the field about 35' to the south, you'll find 4.7 magnitude 11 Comae Berenices. This bright star makes an excellent landmark in your hop to NGC 4293. |
