NGC 4111: Galaxy Pair (Canes Venatici) RA: 12h 07.1m / DEC: +43° 03'.9
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

You'll find NGC 4111 in the northeast corner of the hunting dogs, Canes Venatici. 5.2 magnitude 67 Ursae Majoris lies just across the border about a degree due east. 8.1 magnitude HD 105288 neatly halves the distance separating NGC 4111 and NGC 4117. This star is centered in the sketch at left, which presents a 129X view in my 10-inch Meade Starfinder. An 11th magnitude GSC star hovers nearby, 34" to the southwest. NGC 4111 is positioned west of center, a pencil thin misty patch covering a 4'x0'.5 area. This 10.7 magnitude SO-type galaxy is aligned northwest-to-southeast. The disk appears thickest near the central core region and gradually tapers to a point at each extreme. The central 15" of the core also looks somewhat brighter. NGC 4117 is barely detected, 5' northeast of the central stellar pairing. Just the core of this SO-type galaxy is seen. The 20"x15" haze looks like little more than a smudge on the night sky. Such an inconspicuous appearance does not do justice to this stellar metropolis, which is home to billions of suns.
