This fine pair is tucked away among the stars forming the hind legs of the Great Bear. NGC 3893 and NGC 3896 are a degree northeast of 3.7 magnitude Chi (63) Ursae Majoris. NGC 3893 appears the larger of the two in my 10-inch, f/4.5 Newtonian. This 10.3 magnitude spiral covers a 3' diameter area. 10.9 magnitude PPM 52640 burns about 3' to the southwest. NGC 3896 is a small, faint spiral occupying a mere 1' diameter area. 8.3 magnitude SAO 43895 marks the field from a position 12' south of NGC 3893.
