NGC 3621: Spiral Galaxy (Hydra) RA: 11h 18.3m / DEC: -32° 48'.8
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

This fine spiral galaxy would undoubtedly have a better reputation among Northern Hemisphere observers if not for its far southerly declination. NGC 3621 is located in Hydra at a declination of nearly -33 degrees. This places the galaxy in the soupy air near the horizon for most North American and European observers. My sketch captures the view at 82X in the 10-inch Starfinder. This 9.5 magnitude spiral appears thin and delicate, extending 9'x5' in size. Four stars, 11th through 13th magnitude, frame the galaxy. Another 16 field stars complete the drawing. 3.5 magnitude Xi Hydrae is located about 3.2 degrees to the east-northeast.
