NGC 3294: Spiral Galaxy (Leo Minor) RA: 10h 36.3m / RA: +37° 19'.5
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

This Sc-type spiral is located in nondescript Leo Minor. The sketch at left presents this galaxy as it appears in my 10-inch Newtonian. NGC 3294 is an 11.8 magnitude galaxy. Its 3'x1' form is elongated northwest-to-southeast and appears flatter along the northern edge. Also, the galactic bulge appears offset toward the northwest end. 4.2 magnitude Beta (31) Leonis Minoris, 1.8 degrees to the west-southwest, is the launching pad for a star hop to NGC 3294. SAO 62151, a 9.7 magnitude star positioned just 5' east of the galaxy, marks the correct field. Ten additional field stars complete the view.
