Cassiopeia is not usually associated with galaxies. The queen of the night harbors several fine open star clusters but not many objects beyond the Milky Way. NGC 278 is the exception to the rule. This S-type galaxy resides 1.4 degrees southeast of 4.5 magnitude Omicron (22) Cassiopeiae. A 5.0 magnitude star, Pi (20) Cassiopeiae shines 1.6 degrees to the southwest. The sketch at left records the view at 63X in my 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian. NGC 278 is visible just 3' south of a 9th magnitude GSC star. The galaxy appears as a 1'.5 diameter diffuse orb with a stellar core region. Another 14 field stars complete the view.
