This object is easy to track down. Just locate 4.7 magnitude 19 Puppis, which should be visible to the naked eye under typical rural skies, and you'll see this delicate open star cluster adjacent to the northwest. My sketch records an 82X view in the 10-inch Starfinder equatorial Newtonian. 19 Puppis blazes away with a deep yellow hue just 8' southeast of the center of my drawing. This burning ember also marks one extreme of the cluster. Of the more than 90 stars in my sketch, about 60 lie within the confines of NGC 2539. The cluster, centered within the west-northwest quadrant of my drawing, ranges across a 21' diameter area and shines with the collective brightness of a single 6.5 magnitude star.
