NGC 2479: Open Star Cluster (Puppis) RA: 07h 55.1m / DEC: -17° 42'.5
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

NGC 2479 is pictured at left. The drawing presents a 129X view in my 10-inch, f/4.5 reflector. The 9.6 magnitude cluster includes the central loose scattering of 24 stars. It covers a 7' diameter area or about half the field presented in my sketch. Seventeen additional stars complete the view. This object was difficult to confirm using the GSC in MegaStar because that catalog does not include several of the faintest stars in my drawing. I was able to confirm the observation using a DSS image acquired through SIMBAD. In particular, the DSS image clearly shows the narrow V-pattern of eight stars positioned just a few arc minutes southwest of the center of the field. NGC 2479 is located about 4 degrees southeast of M46.
