NGC 2440: Planetary Nebula (Puppis) RA: 07h 41.9m / DEC: -18° 12'.5 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
This interesting planetary nebula resides in Puppis, one of four constellations into which Argo was divided. 5.2 magnitude 6 Puppis shines about 2 degrees to the northeast. The drawing at left renders the view in my 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian at 190X. NGC 2440 is centered in the sketch. This nebula has a photographic magnitude of 10.8, which suggests a visual magnitude between 9.8 and 10.3. A bright diamond-shaped nebula is immediately visible. This section is slightly elongated north-northwest to south-southeast over a 20"x18" area and is sided to the east-northeast and west-southwest by subtle misty lobes. These outer lobes extend nearly a full arc minute across. About 45 field stars salt the area. Included among these is 8.5 magnitude HD 62167, 3' due east of NGC 2440. |
