This interesting globular star cluster resides in western Lynx just across the tracks from Auriga. In fact, the nearest bright stars are 5.1 magnitude 65 Aurigae, about 4 degrees to the southwest, and 5.2 magnitude 66 Aurigae, located 3 degrees to the northwest. A 190X view in my 10-inch Newtonian is presented in the sketch at left. NGC 2419 is offset just east of center with 7.2 magnitude HD 60771 shinging just 4' to the west. The globular's 10.3 magnitude glow is measured across a 3' diameter area. The inner 2' is noticealby brighter and has a irregular outer edge. However, no stars are resolved. This is not surprising considering that the brightest members of this cluster glow feebly at 17.3 magnitude. Its stars are so faint because NGC 2419 resides some 84 kiloparsecs (274,000 light-years) from Earth.
