NGC 2266: Open Star Cluster (Gemini) RA: 06h 43.3m / DEC: +26° 58'.2 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
The winter twins, Gemini, is where you'll find this delicate little jewel. NGC 2266 is neatly centered in the sketch at left. Presenting a 129X view in my 10-inch Newtonian, the drawing shows this 9.5 magnitude open cluster as a 6' diameter collection of stars. The brightest members form a Y-pattern at the heart of the cluster. The 8.9 magnitude star at the base of the Y is HD 48175. Three 10th magnitude stars complete the pattern. And another nine stars in the 11-12 magnitude range define the cluster's form. A host of fainter stars produce a delicate glow under direct gaze, but some 15-20 are discerned with averted vision. Another 24 stars dot the field, framing the cluster. NGC 2266 is located 2-degrees north of 3.0 magnitude Epsilon (27) Geminorum. |
