NGC 2022: Planetary Nebula (Orion) RA: 05h 42.1m / DEC: +09° 05'.2 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
This faint little stinker is located in northern Orion, 3.6 degrees northwest of 0.5 magnitude Betelgeuse. 4.1 magnitude Phi2 (40) Orionis resides 1.3 degrees to the west. My sketch renders a 190X view in the 10-inch, f/4.5 Newtonian. NGC 2022 is southeast of center. This planetary nebula has a photographic magnitude of 12.4, which suggests a visual reading of from 0.5 to 1.0 magnitude brighter. This is a delicate object in the Starfinder, about 20" across and gauzy to the eye. Sixteen field stars are shown, the brightest being 9th magnitude GSC 714:43 about 10' from NGC 2022 at the northwest boundary. |
