NGC 1857: Open Star Cluster (Auriga) RA: 05h 20.1m / DEC: +39° 20'.6 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
NGC 1857 is in Auriga, the charioteer, about 46' south of 4.7 magnitude Lambda (15) Aurigae. At +39 degrees declination, this open star cluster passes very near the zenith for observers at mid-northern latitudes. The sketch at left presents the view in my 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian at 129X. Centered in the field and in the 5' diameter cluster is 7.4 magnitude HD 34545. A pair of 9th magnitude GSC stars stand 2'.3 to the east marking one extreme of this cluster, as defined by Lynga. A Y-shaped grouping of five faint stars, perhaps 13th magnitude, extends north and west from HD 34545 toward another boundary. Six to eight of the remaining 28 field stars also belong to NGC 1857. |
