Small planetary nebulae only begin to reveal their structure when moderate aperture and high magnification are applied. That's the case with NGC 1535. The sketch at left presents a 247X view in my 10-inch Newtonian. That magnification produces a 1-mm exit pupil at the eyepiece and that's high magnification. The planetary is centered in the field. A bright central bar extends north-to-south over a 10"x2" area. This bar is enveloped within a circular 15" diameter nebulosity. A four-star asterism is visible about 6' to the east-southeast, which resembles a smaller version of the constellation Corvus, the crow. These stars range in brightness from 11th magnitude for the star at the northernmost corner to 13th magnitude for the star at the corner furthest east. The tangle of six faint stars immediately west of NGC 1535 fall in at 13th and 14th magnitude, according to the GSC. NGC 1535 is located 4 degrees west-southwest of 3.0 magnitude Zaurak, Gamma (34) Eridani. How's that for a good Klingon name?
