This 6.7 magnitude open cluster is stationed in central Perseus. Algol, the devil star, blazes away 6 degrees to the northwest. My sketch renders the view in my 10-inch Newtonian at 129X. NGC 1342 is centered and takes up nearly half the field. Lynga gives a diameter of 14' and a membership of 40 stars for NGC 1342. About 30 cluster members are included in the drawing. Two of the three stars forming the bright trio just north of center belong to the cluster. Only the northernmost trio member is excluded. An additional 16 field stars frame the view.
