M47: Open Star Cluster (Puppis) RA: 07h 36.6m / DEC: -14° 29'.0 Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder |
M47 is a delightful open star cluster located amidst a group of clusters in the far northern region of Puppis. You can get there one of two ways. Either slew north about 10 degrees from M93 or drop south about 5 degrees from 3.9 magnitude Alpha Monocerotis. If you begin the hop from Alpha Mon, be careful not to mistake nearby M46 for this gem collection. M47 is located 1.3 degrees west of M46. My drawing shows 45 stars, including several 6th and 7th magnitude sparklers. M47 covers much of the 39' field and is a wonderful object for small telescopes. |
