The Orion Nebula (M42): 20-minute exposure at prime focus (f/4.5) on Kodak PJM 640 color print film

M42-The Orion Nebula

The Orion nebula is perhaps the most photographed object in the night sky. An exposure such as the above example will record lots of color and detail. This image was taken at prime focus through my 10-inch Starfinder equatorial. The focal ratio was f/4.5 and the exposure lasted 20 minutes. Notice the range of colors. Reds, blues, grays and whites are present. This magnificent object is captured by film in a manner than cannot be experienced by visual observation. Also notice the big, fat star images. They are the result of a couple of problems. The guiding was not perfect and the focus was slightly off. Notice the stars at the edge of the field are elongated. This is coma. Prime focus astrophotography is a real challenge.
