Comet Hyakutake

Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

Comet Hyakutake continues to brighten as it approaches perigee, just ten days away. The sketch at left records a 3rd magnitude comet featuring a stellar nucleus buried within a 10 arc minute diameter coma. The tail extends due west for a distance of some 45 arc minutes. The dual section tail reminds me of sparrow wings. The northern wing reaches slightly farther than the southern. The bright star to the north of comet Hyakutake is 9th magnitude HD 131696. The sketch captures the view in my 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian at 49X.
