Comet Hale-Bopp: 1-minute unguided exposure on Kodak PJM 640 color print film

Comet Hale-Bopp Rises over Mt. Elden

Bright comets don't come around very often. We were fortunate to witness two spectacular comets in back-to-back years. Comet Hyakutake (1996) and comet Hale-Bopp (1997) were seen by millions of people worldwide. This photo of comet Hale-Bopp was taken during morning twilight on March 13, 1997. The photo was taken with a Nikon F3 camera and a 35-mm to 70-mm zoom lens set to 50-mm. I used Kodak PJM (ASA 640) color print film and exposed for 30 seconds at f/4 to capture this image of the comet rising over Mt. Elden north of Flagstaff. Notice the slight elongation of the stars and the brightening twilight sky through the trees.
