Comet Hale-Bopp: 20-minute exposure at prime focus (f/4.5) on Kodak PJM 640 color print film

Comet Hale-Bopp

Comet Hale-Bopp put on a spectacular display during early 1997. This photo was taken on March 12 an hour or so before morning twilight. It captures the bright yellow dust tail of the comet with a hint of the blue plasma tail being visible above the dust tail. The photo was taken at the prime focus of my 10-inch, f/4.5 Starfinder equatorial. The exposure time was 10-minutes on Kodak PJM (ASA 640) color print film. As much as I like this photo, there are several problems revealed upon close scrutiny. The most severe is coma away from the center of the field. Notice the elongated star images. They become more elongated the farther they are from the center of the image and they appear to trail away from the center of the image.
