Comet Hale-Bopp

Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder

I am able to track down comet Hale-Bopp less than one month after its discovery. The comet is as distant as Jupiter and no more than 20 km (13 miles) in size. Amazingly, it is producing enough gas and dust to be seen with a 10-inch Newtonian. The drawing at left represents the appearance of the comet at 82X. Hale-Bopp presents a delicate gauzy glow about two arc minutes in diameter. This comet is a real challenge to detect from my dark sky site just south of Madison, Wisconsin. Hale-Bopp resides in the murk of southern Sagittarius where the transparency is akin to that of a frosted glass. The comet has moved just 24 arc seconds from last night's position.
