Deep Impact: Comet Tempel

Comet 9P/Tempel: June 5, 2005 05:30 UT
Instrument: 18-inch Obsession

The night of June 4, 2005, I swung the 18-inch towards Virgo and swept up this faint comet. The observation was made at 10:30 pm MST (05:30 UT, 5 June). Comet Tempel was at RA: 12h 59m 15s, Dec: +01° 40' 30" or about 7 arc minutes due west of 9.9 magnitude PPM 159379. The brightest part of the coma extends due south about 3'.5, fanning a bit to the south-southwest and displaying a very delicate filament to the south-southeast. A faint stellar nuclear region is visible in my sketch, which was made at 199X in the Obsession. Eleven stars frame the view, including a 10th magnitude GSC star 3'.5 to the northwest of Tempel.
