Aurora over Flagstaff: Twenty-second unguided exposure on Fuji Superia 800 color print film

October 29, 2003 Aurora: Painting the Bowl

Within minutes of the crescendo, the concert appeared to begin waning. But it was just shifting location. By 1:43 am, the most intense display had moved to the north-northeast horizon. The above photograph was shot between tall Ponderosa pines and shows the intense color display above Mt. Elden. The bowl of the Big Dipper sits between the pines, awaiting spring and a more prominent place in the heavens. Softer licks of color dab at the sky from behind Elden and are ocassionally seen through the trees.
