Aurora over Flagstaff: Sixty-second unguided exposure on Kodak PJM 640 color print film

March 30-31, 2001: Aurora Over the San Francisco Peaks

The above photo was taken from an open field on the north side of Flagstaff. I chose this location because it offers a wonderful view of the San Francisco peaks, seen in silhouette in the photo. Above, a bright red aurora blankets the sky. My only regret was that I did not take any exposures shorter than one minute in length. A 15- or 30-second shot may have recorded more structure. Oh well, there's always next time. Unfortunately, aurora are uncommon in this part of North America. Next time might not arrive for another eleven years.
