|NGC 4697: Galaxy (Virgo) RA: 12h 48.6m / DEC: -05° 48'.0|
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder
NGC 4697 is another of Virgo's fine, bright galaxies. At 82X, the 10-inch Newtonian presents a 5'x3' east-to-west aligned oval. The RC3 classifies NGC 4697 as an E6 elliptical galaxy. It has a radial velocity of 1236 km/sec, which suggests a relatively close distance of about 60 million light-years. 8.9 magnitude HD 111412 shines at the northern edge of the field. A 10th magnitude GSC star is visible 22'.5 southeast of NGC 4697 near the field boundary. You'll find this stellar metropolis about 3 degrees northeast of 4.7 magnitude Chi (26) Virginis.
