|NGC 2985: Spiral Galaxy (Ursa Major) RA: 09h 50.4m / DEC: +72° 16'.7|
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder
You'll find this celestial gem in northern Ursa Major about half-a-degree east of 5.2 magnitude 27 Ursae Majoris. A 129X view in the 10-inch Starfinder Newtonian is presented in the sketch at left. NGC 2985 is centered. This Sb-type spiral features a stellaring embedded within a 1' diameter core region. The outer disk region extends to 4'.5x3'.5 in dimension. A 12th magnitude GSC star is visible in the foreground against the eastern half of the galactic disk. Another 17 field stars are scattered across the field. The five-star asterism 10' to the east-northeast is really quite striking in the 10-inch.
