|NGC 2421: Open Star Cluster (Puppis) RA: 07h 36.2m / DEC: -20° 36'.7|
Instrument: 10-inch Starfinder
The sketch at left renders a 129X view in my 10-inch Newtonian. NGC 2421 covers a 10' diameter area and includes most of the 48 stars recorded in the drawing. Five 11th and 12th magnitude stars form a cornucopia asterism just a few arc minutes southwest of the center of the field. The cornucopia has a slight arcing shape running east-southeat to west-northwest for a distance of about 4 arc minutes. A triangle asterism is visible 4' northeast of the cornucopia. NGC 2421 appears as an unresolved diffuse patch in my 8x50 finder scope. This 8.3 magnitude cluster can be found about 5 degrees northwest of 3.3 magnitude Xi (7) Puppis.
